Home & School Autumn 2021 Newsletter

·      Gift Card Raffle
Home & School is hustling to get our fundraisers done early this year and our Gift Card Raffle helps to pay for all the fun activities ahead. We’re looking for donations of gift cards that you might have around that you aren’t planning to use or just want to donate to the cause. Then we’ll get them together and have a raffle to win them all, just in time for the holiday season!
Please send any gift cards in to the office by November 5th!
Keep an eye out for tickets the week of November 15th with the draw happening on November 26th!!

·      Christmas Gift Mart
This hugely popular event is back again this year for the kids to do a little shopping at Athena’s own Christmas Gift Mart. To make it happen we need your gently used or low-cost new items that would be suitable gifts for students’ family members (Mom, Dad, grandparents, siblings, etc.).(No food or clothing please). The students will come through to pick out their gifts ($1 each) and have them wrapped ready to be put under the tree! Wrapping material like gift bags, paper and tape is appreciated as well. More details to follow but for now, start collecting items around the house to add to the Athena Market! J

·      Calendars!
We have a few calendars left to sell and being 12 month calendars it’s not too late to get one for your fridge. They have all the important dates for the year so you don’t miss anything and 100% of the proceeds go to Home & School to support Breakfast Program, Staff Appreciation and all the other things we do. Send $10 into the office and get yourself a calendar before they’re all gone!

·      Breakfast Program
We’re looking for a volunteer for Tuesday mornings from 7:30-8:45. Maybe you’re already dropping a student off for early morning band, or have a little time to spare that morning and can butter toast or cut up cheese? Contact the office if this sounds like a way you’d like to share your time with the Athena family.

·      Next meeting is November 1st, 7pm at the school library. All are welcome!

Staff Appreciation 2021!

Here's a copy of the handout for Staff Appreciation this year, just in case it didn't make it home.  We're so excited to make it known, just how much we love our Athena staff! We're spreading it out over the month rather than all in one week, so be sure to take note which week you're encouraged to bring some treats in to the school. And with the Appreciation Lego Bricks sent in to the school with a message from students, we're excited to build a wall of Awesome for all the staff to see! With everyone's help, this is sure to be a big success!  Thank you so much!

Guest Speaker Night, Jillian Stewart!

Come out for an evening of learning from our Public Schools Branch Child Psychologist! January 20, 2020 at 7pm in the Athena Library (H&S meeting at 7, Guest speaker at 7:30).
This presentation will be focused on shifting the way we understand and approach children's difficult behaviour. Jillian will distinguish between misbehaviour and stress behaviour, and will demonstrate the role parents can play in improving their children's self-regulation skills and mental wellness outcomes.

Athena Gift Mart!

You’ve heard that Athena Home and School is putting on a Holiday Gift Mart on December 17th, 2019, with a storm date of December 18th, 2019, and we’ve got some details to share.

This is new to Athena so here is how it works: each student’s family will donate new or gently used items to the gift mart. The students will shop at the gift mart for their family members and in order to ensure every student gets a chance to buy something, they will be limited to a maximum of 3 items for $1 per item.

The most important part of this is the donations, which is where you come in. The kids LOVE having a gift they’ve purchased as a surprise under the tree for you, but it means we need lots of donations of those items you’ve been looking to move on to a new home! This includes lightly used or new low-cost gifts that can be helpful around the house. Including toiletries, small hand tools or toys (in good working order). We can’t use food or most clothing, but scarves are fine.
We also need wrapping material, like gift bags, tissue paper, tape, scissors and gift tags. If you wanted to send your child with pre-filled gift tags with the intended recipient (ie. Mom, Dad, sibling, etc.) that would be helpful too!

We’ll be sorting through all the items on the 16th so please get those donations in this week!

And CONGRATULATIONS to Lauren Power on winning the Gift Card Raffle!

Thank you so much for your help and have a wonderful Christmas season!
Sincerely,
Athena Home & School
